SUCCESS STORY

End User Battles Mechanical Seal Performance
on High Pressure Ethane Pipeline

Region & Customer:

USA – Louisiana, Major Oil & Gas Company

Equipment:

BB3 Multi Stage Pumps, Goulds 8 stage

Operating Conditions:

Ethane pipeline, 1440 PSIG Pipeline Pressure, Frequent Equipment Stops & Starts

BACKGROUND

At startup and during operation the customer experienced very erratic seal performance & short seal life with a competitor’s tandem conventional seal due to vaporization in the seal gap.  Seal life did not reach more than 1 month. Many fluid variables made it difficultfor the seal to work reliably

CHALLENGE

Ethane is very sensitive to seal generated heat and pressure variables, which caused premature vaporization resulting in excessive face damage and premature failure of the mechanical seal solution

SOLUTION

EagleBurgmann DF-DGS6 non-contacting vaporizing seal with API Plan 12/76

DF-DGS6: 2 non-contacting seals running in tandem

  • The process fluid vaporizes near and in the seal gap
  • No vapor pressure margin required
  • Seal faces do not contact & no wear or heat
  • No barrier fluid/ reservoir for the secondary seal
  • Designed to handle vaporizing liquids

STATUS

Currently operating for 3 years with no issues

  • Reliable seal performance
  • Consistent delivery of ethane to the refinery
