SITUATION

Pharmaceutical and  biopharmaceutical applications present partlcular difficulties. Take for instance, a manufacturer of bio cultures wilh a fermenter that utilized a bottom entry agitator. Thls agitator was equipped with our MR-D wet running dual seal, which needed to be in a sterile SIP & CIP (steam in place & clean in place) environment.

Only Silicon carbide (SiC) was approved as product contacting face materials. SiC is a commonly used face material that is very hard and is popular for its wide chemical stability and compatibility, and its low wear rates.

 

CHALLENGE

Steam condensate from Ultra-Pure water is used as the barrier fluid for its purity. Because it actually has very little lubricity, it causes higher than normal wear rates when the SiC faces run against each other. This results in higher leakage rates and shorter seal life.


OUR SOLUTION

EagleBurgmann offered thee pharmaceutical manufacturer our Diamondface technology to help combat the  poor lubricity of Ultra-Pure water application and significantly improve seal life.

The two SiC faces now have a micro-crystalline diamond coating applied to them. Due to the excellent sliding properties our diamond face technology offers, the MR-D seal ran for six months. Then faces were inspected and no issues were found so, they were put back into service and continued to operate successfully

The pharmaceutical manufacturer was so impressed with the stellar performnace of the SiC Diamond Face combination that it has now become their new technological standard!
