Imagine an emergency, or even a planned refinery process shutdown. Unfortunately the compressor must be idled as well. As a result, the dry gas seal supply flow is lost, which forces venting the compressor, or supplying an alternate seal gas source. Both options can have undesirable consequences. Venting the compressor is costly and wastes process gas, which is lost to the flare and produces unwanted emissions. An alternate seal gas source also requires venting the gas to maintain seal gas flow, and it contaminates the process with the alternate gas. Both options produce extended outage and costly maintenance expenses.
