SITUATION

The failure plaguing many plants for years has been electro-corrosion of the silicon carbide faces within the seal. This is due to electrical charges that build up at the faces along with pure low conductivity reactor grade water being pumped. Electro-corrosion problems that drastically reduced lifetimes of mechanical seals started to occur when Combined Oxygen Treatment (COT or CWT, pH 8…9) was introduced in some existing and in new fossil-fueled power plants (1990s). The water‘s electrical conductivity indicates water purity. As impurities are removed, the feed water becomes an electrical insulator rather than a conductor.

  • Large boiler feed pumps: typical pressure up to 580 psi (40 bar), 6.500 rpm, 400 °F (200 °C)
  • Mechanical Seal (M.S.) single, balanced, stationary, spring-type, sliding velocities > 130 ft/s (> 40 m/s), 140 °F (60 °C) in Plan23
